Bullet Proof Coffee, mmm, mmm good!

*Update: Since writing this, several posts have been published questioning Bullet Proof Coffee due to the high amounts of both butter and coconut oil.  It is important to note the recipe pictured here uses substantially less butter and coconut oil  than traditional BPC recipes.

Bullet Proof CoffeeBullet proof coffee, titled from expert Dave Asprey, is not only delicious but healthy for you!  Personally, I can’t believe it has taken me this long to try it, but now I am hooked.

Buttered tea or coffee is a common beverage around the world for both taste and health reasons.  Bullet proof coffee uses the concept of a buttered beverage and adds beneficial MCT (medium chain triglycerides) oil for additional health benefits to include increased energy, vitality, and focus.

Butter provides key nutrients and health benefits( see “I Can’t Believe You Still Fear Butter”) to include: fat soluble vitamins, CLA, and butyric acid, all associated with improved cardiovascular, brain and endocrine health as well as body composition. Note, all butter is not created equal.  I recommend organic butter from grass fed cows as it is  rich in the all powerful anti-inflammatory, omega 3 fatty acids, as well as fat soluble vitamins. Personally, I use Kerrygold butter as I love the taste and the availability at most stores.   The addition of MCT oil (i.e. coconut oil) is beneficial as these fats are metabolized differently than most, as they travel to the liver after leaving the digestive tract to be utilized as energy.  MCT oil has also shown to increase fat metabolism as it is used for energy instead of being stored as fat and it may have beneficial effects on brain function.

I listed the ingredients that I like to use in my cup of Bullet Proof Coffee in the picture above but it is important to note that blending the ingredients is strongly recommended for best flavor and to get the froth seen in the picture. You can use a regular blender (I use my Vitamix) or an immersion blender.  I make my coffee first and then combine the coffee, butter, coconut oil and vanilla stevia (to taste) into the blender. I have also added cacao powder but you can use any or none of the optional ingredients listed above to make your perfect cup.

Enjoy, in my opinion, the best cup of coffee you will ever drink!  Besides the thank you from your body, your wallet will also reap the benefits from no longer stopping at Starbucks or your favorite coffee bar as nothing compares to Bullet Proof Coffee!
